I have always considered the dining room to be a separate room in the house. It is a living room but it is not used as much as the living room or even the kitchen. And even if its use is punctual, comfort and friendliness are essential in this space of the house. So how do you decorate the dining room with a dark color? Is this a wise choice? How to match the furniture with color? I will try to answer all these questions and more in the rest of this article.
WHY CHOOSE A DARK COLOR TO DECORATE THE DINING ROOM?
The choice of a dark color to decorate is not trivial whether it is in the dining room or in the rest of the house for that matter. They are visually strong colors. They are also warm, intimate, sometimes sweet. But what result can you expect when you consider using dark in your dining room decor?
AN ELEGANT ATMOSPHERE IN THE DINING ROOM
The first thing that comes to mind is the idea of elegance. Dark shades are often associated with chic and distinction. They can make us think of the Baroque style which frequently uses the dark in its representative patterns. They can also send us back to the Victorian era or more broadly to an atmosphere across the Channel with the spirit of English cottages. Elegance with a certain restraint, with good manners … Like those that we have to hold at the table.
ARE ALL DARK COLORS SUITABLE FOR THE DINING ROOM?
In this article, I will not do as in the articles about the kitchen or the bathroom (I put them at the bottom of this page by the way…), I will not offer you a description / explanatory for each shade of dark. On the other hand, I wanted to wonder if all the colors had their place in the dining room.
Dark blue is an “easy” choice in the sense that it is difficult to plant yourself when using it. Although blue is generally considered a cool color, when it is in dark shades, it becomes very warm. It is also a color that inspires calm and relaxation. It is ideal for digesting and spending pleasant meals.
Black on the walls or black in the furniture is not the same thing. To dare black paint on the walls of the dining room requires a lot of guts. We can obviously think of black as a blackboard. We are going to energize it with white letterpress, bistro card effect. The elegance of a slightly outdated French heritage. In this way, we create a friendly atmosphere. The black with moldings can be very pretty, very elegant but it will be necessary to think of creating contrast and light. Black and gold are two very chic and refined colors. Finally, black can be found in the dining room through the furniture. Black furniture is more common and it is even possible that your dining room is already this color. And in this case, black harmonizes with any type of color. Black and white for a contemporary dining room. Black, patterns, and colors for a mix and match effect. Black and wood for a warm play of light…
Finally, I wanted to touch on the color green in the dining room. One day someone told me that green was not a color to be used in restaurants or in places where we eat meals. I never understood the logic if there is one. I’ve been trying to understand for years. In vain. Green is a somewhat special color, it rarely leaves you indifferent. It is, therefore, a kind of bias to choose green to decorate the dining room. Personally, I like to bottle green or fir green, but I would find it harder to use them in the dining room. I will leave more on an English green, more organic and more velvety. I find these shades less garish, softer and enveloping.
SINGULAR USE OF DARK COLOR IN A DINING ROOM
If you have already had the opportunity to browse the other articles of the blog devoted to dark colors, you already know that there is not only one way to use them. It is not just a matter of applying dark paint on the walls. There are alternatives.
THE DARK COLORS AND THE BASE
The first “alternative” to the dark color block that comes to mind is the base. A dark base and the top of the wall in a lighter color. A light base and top of the wall in dark. If you already have a paneled base for example in your dining room, painting it in a dark color will allow you to erase the slats and details. Still in the spirit of a dark base, what is interesting is that we keep a large part of the walls in a light color and therefore brighter.
A WHITE MOLDING TO CUT THE WALL
Another possibility: the use of the molding. The walls are in a solid dark color and the wall and the uniformity are cut with a molding painted in white. It is a detail that enhances the elegance. The molding is definitely synonymous with elegance even when it is very simple. In addition, this small decorative detail in the dining room is easy to implement. There are moldings in polystyrene, they are light, easily cut. In the same spirit, we can distinguish the dark walls with white woodwork.
THE TONE ON TONE TO MAKE THE FURNITURE DISAPPEAR
The tone on tone and the dark colors are a trendy association. And in the dining room, it lends itself perfectly. The tone on tone is a decorative process that consists of superimposing different elements of the same color in your decoration. A sideboard in the same color as the wall on which it is placed, for example. The effect of tone on tone makes the piece of furniture disappear, at least, it makes it more discreet since it tends to blend with the wall. We can play with different aspects: a velvety or matt wall, more satin furniture. Discreet lighting.
FURNITURE AND DARK SHADE IN THE DINING ROOM
I mentioned above, walls are not the only components to take into account when talking about color. The furniture can also be colored and it can also be the touch of dark color in your dining room. In the beginning, I thought of making a sub-part on the association dark furniture + dark walls, but in the end, no. I do not recommend it unless you have a very high brightness in your room.
LIGHT FURNITURE – WALLS IN A DARK SHADE
You can create a contrast between the furniture and the walls. The walls are dark, the furniture is lighter. If you have a wooden table with a clear essence or a buffet it is perfect. Wood is a noble material, warm and above all luminous. It will contribute to the brightness of your room even if most of the walls are dark in color.
DARK FURNITURE – LIGHT WALLS
I mentioned it when I was talking about black. Dining room furniture is sometimes this color. And we can also play on the contrast. The black that colors the furniture and decorative items, the white on the wall, black and white photos for a modern atmosphere. You can also add a touch of color to create a lively atmosphere in the dining room with colored chairs around a dark table. Despite the dark side of the furniture, we stay in a bright atmosphere with this type of association.
HOW TO CREATE A PLEASANT ATMOSPHERE DESPITE A DARK COLOR IN THE DINING ROOM?
Last part of this article that I did not imagine so long when I started it: the decorative details that will allow you to create a friendly atmosphere even if you use dark colors. They are often considered dismal because they absorb light. But this is not inevitable!
LUMINAIRES FOR A LUMINOUS ATMOSPHERE IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE
Light in dark-colored rooms is essential, and not only in the dining room. On the other hand, in the dining room, it is essential to pay particular attention to the light. Try to eat in the dark, you will see that it is not very pleasant! The main light is to light the whole room and especially the whole table. You can also add extra lights to create more light and make the space more welcoming. The appearance of the lights can allow you to boost the general atmosphere of your room. Gold and brass are trendy and above all very bright materials which harmonize very well with dark colors.
WALL DECORATION TO BREAK THE UNIFORMITY
The wall decoration in general in the dining room seems to be very important. It is a room that is used less and the decoration on the walls makes it more lively even if you spend little time there. In the case of a dining room with walls painted in a dark and solid color, the wall decoration will bring an interesting irregularity. Wooden frames for the warm side. Marie-Louise to highlight photos or illustrations and bring a touch of clarity.
FLOWERS AND PLANTS FOR A LIVELY TOUCH IN A DARK DINING ROOM
Finally, flowers and green plants are great allies to bring life and a contemporary side to a slightly too classic and dark dining room. Even if I really like flowers in a pretty vase in the center of the table, I have more trouble with the ephemeral side of cut flowers. (And casually, a pretty bouquet is not given!) I am more green plants that will last much longer and that will grow quietly in their pot. We can think of an exotic plant with a large leaf in a corner of the room. You can also decorate the top of the buffet with plants of different sizes. The natural green of the plants will add a touch of color.
